Sserwadda Hakim's Success Story

When we first met Sserwadda Hakim, a bright and soft-spoken twelve-year-old in Primary Five, he had been out of school for months. Every time he tried to attend class, he was sent back home to bring school fees—fees his family simply couldn’t afford. Eventually, the constant disappointment forced Hakim to stay home, even though all he wanted was to learn.

Hakim has grown up in a difficult situation. His parents separated when he was very young, his father has been in prison for over two years, and his mother struggles with alcoholism. With nowhere else to turn, Hakim went to live with his aunt, who does her best to care for him and her own children by roasting maize by the roadside. Despite her love for him, she just couldn’t manage the cost of school.

When we heard about Hakim’s situation, we knew we had to help.

Through Beyond Nations, Hakim was able to return to school without the fear of being chased home again. We provided his school fees and scholastic materials, and the transformation has been incredible. Hakim is now fully back in class—happy, settled, and performing exceptionally well. His teachers speak highly of him, and he is confidently preparing to be promoted to Primary Six next year.

Hakim often says how grateful he is to God and to Beyond Nations for giving him a chance he thought he had lost. The smile on his face when he talks about school says it all. He dreams of becoming a pilot one day, and for the first time, that dream feels possible.

Hakim’s story reminds us why we do what we do. With support, a child’s future can change completely.
